Technical Architect Required [3 mth -> full time]

posted on 14/5/2002

The New Media division of a communications agency requires a Technical Architect to start work with the team immediately. Our department is a small, organically grown group, comprising some of the most talented people in this field, servicing government and private sector new media interests and competing against the largest consultancy names in the industry, and winning.

Due to the type of work, you will need to be both conceptual as well as retaining your development background. We have production staff so you won't be a project manager; you'll be working on a rich email campaign one day, contributing to technical strategy for a project that has a lifespan of years the next and providing your knowledge and experience to those working with you to overcome developmental and architectural problems on an ongoing basis.

You will have a minimum of 4 years pure commercial experience [that doesn't include freelancing at university], of which:
- At least 3 years will have been spent working in new media
- At least one year has been spent working as a technical architect or senior developer.
- Preferably have a computer science degree or have studied [at least 2 years] computer science as part of a science degree.

You are not expected to be a designer, but you should have good design comprehension as our design and development staff are very closely integrated. You will be a solid team player, whilst being able to take direction [creatively and technically] and provide direction to more junior staff members should they require it [technical guidance during build phases and design guidance on whether things can or cannot work].

You are expected to be presentable and personable, able to present your ideas succinctly both in written and verbal communications, and be confident enough to present your ideas to cross-departmental account teams or to selected clients.

Technically you will be :

- An expert in the primary web languages comprising HTML/JavaScript/CSS [with an understanding of cross-platform issues and appreciation of why HTML is moving on towards XML and XHTML].
- Extremely skilled in ASP and SQL with a good understanding of the different database systems and how they work [you don't need to be an expert in Oracle but it helps].
- Good knowledge of XML and its principles, and wanting to learn more about this.
- Very good knowledge and experience in at least one of the following languages: PERL/JSP or JAVA/C++/PHP [PERL and C++ are least desired as we have these skills, though they will not be turned away]
- Able to construct and tune a database [or direct someone else in doing so]
- Understand timing principles and be aware of issues to do with performance of code
- Understand what an Finite State Machine is and how it can be applied to development in New Media.

Our company:

Redhouse Lane is a communications agency that spans design, new media, corporate publishing and strategy. Clients range from very large private sector such as British Airways Authority through to government such as the NHS and the DTI.

We pride ourselves on very high quality work and our thorough process, as well as creative and technical expertise has led us to victories over much larger organisations such as the BBC, COI and IBM for new business.

We offer a competitive salary in the current market place as well as benefits such as 5 weeks holiday, an excellent pension scheme and gym membership.

If you would like to apply for this position. Please follow these instrcutions:

Send your contact details including Name, Address and contact phone number by email to: jobs@redhouselane.com with the subject line Technical Architect - Application

This email should also provide a no more than 3 paragraph summary of your experience that you believe is relevant [including summary details of a project that was used by more than 1000 users] along with current salary conditions.

Phone calls will not be accepted at this time, nor will emails that don't adopt this format. Recruitment agencies are asked not to apply at this time.

Redhouse Lane staff will contact you for a brief phone interview at which point you may be invited to submit a CV and portfolio of work for an interview.

We are no longer accepting applications for this project.
