Ditto. When I saw the announcement for this list on Evolt I was ecstatic.
Just what I've been looking for.
Little intro is in order I suppose *:)
I'm not currently freelancing, but I've pretty much had enough of my
current employer and I am about to take that great leap into the unknown.
I'm lucky that I have a few friends that have made this step before, so
advice and opinions are not in short supply. It's all very bewildering though.
I've been developing web sites for around 4 years now. Skills are varied
(in the extreme), including User Interface Design, Site Architecture,
Flash, Director, Quicktime, Javascript, smattering of Perl and all the
other bits and pieces we tend to pick up on the way so I'm pretty much
sorted as a one man production team. Luckily my flatmate is a Project
Manager, so he's going to be helping me with that side of things.
I was having a natter in the pub last night with a few friends (all of
who are thinking of leaving their current employers) and we realised
something. Now this may or may not hold up to scrutiny (I'm betting it
doesn't), but why do we need to work in a hirearchical structure. We work
on the web, shouldn't we work in a web as well?
I suppose it all stems from having employers and managers who don't 'get'
the web, who just see it as an avenue for making money, a new shopfront
if you like. That annoys me.
So, the plan was, why don't we become free agents, knowing that if a job
comes up where we can't handle all of it, we are able to hand off,
through this list, through our other contacts, the areas we can't do.
Probably old hat for alot of people, but it's all new to me (and it
sounded great 4 bottles of Stella in).
So, I hope I'll be able to help where I can, ask if I don't know, and
build some stunning sites along the way.
Here's to Freelancers *:)

P.S. Sorry for the ramble, having to deal with Microsoft Media Player
today.....not good!
