date posted 7th March 2000 12:00
Well , Altavista has started the role rolling. Now there is an offer from
NTL."Communications group NTL announced on Tuesday that it will provide
internet access with no start-up or telephone costs whatsoever from April. "
Interested to see what comes next!

Well I have to say that it is always good news.
We subscribed to a videotron cable and telecoms contract about 6 years ago
(for home). Now they are owned by cable and wireless. At that time the
telecom deal was that you could call other videotron users for free off
peak. We found an isp that had these lines (only one in all london) and for
the last 6 years have had free off peak calls from 6pm to 8am and all
weekend. Cable and wireless closed this down for new users when they bought
the company but they were caught in a contract clause with regards to
exisiting users. Hopefully the moves by BT etc will stop their campaign to
shut down this service.
My only observation of these deals and the upcoming unmetered service from
BT is that we will always be limited to 56k on copper. Which we have found
to be fine when the cost of a call in not the issue any more :-)
I have reservations about cable modems and ASDL after looking into the
shared bandwidth and private network info regarding these services.
By the way, I am writing this from work but all the info above is regarding
my home situation.
Just my thought
Shaun
