In my experience agencies take between 33% and 50%. Once the contract has been
signed and you are working directly with the client, the agencies envolvement can
vary from chasing you up for a timesheet every week to regular meetings to
discuss your well being and future aspirations!
Generally a contract between the client and the agency puts restrictions on the
client employing you directly (without using the agency).
Good luck with the book!
