Re: FN-FORUM Peter McCormack / info @ gobbledeguke.com

I was interested in George Dillon being cross at Peter McCormack for
posting an off line post to the list.
I've just had a similar experience on this list and at first I was a little
cross (because it is an embarrassment). Like George, I thought of
admonishing the person for betraying a confidence, but, it occured to me
that I was probably in the wrong for taking a discussion off list.
The whole point of these lists is not to use them solely to get information
and advice from other people, but, to be able to have an insight into other
people's way of looking at the world - particularly when they are in
opposition to your own thinking. Taking part, or just listening in to other
people's viewpoints, is a truly edifying experience and is the very essence
of collaborative learning. By taking a discussion off list you are denying
everyone else the benefit of a conflict of view points that could be of
value to others.
With so much uncertainty, so much to know and so many different possible
approaches to e-business solutions, it is impossible for anyone to know
they have the right answer. Collaborative learning is about everyone
building their own individual cognitive structures: their own way of
looking at the world. This is quite opposite to the conventional idea of
knowledge, where it is assumed that there is some ultimate "best way" and
everyone should convince by logical arguement so that a common "best
answer" is arrived at by concensus.
Peter McCormack has a very interesting approach to this business. He has
identified that he has the ability to get work through his discovery that
most people are unsatisfied with the results they are getting from their
Web sites and are receptive to new ideas. Unlike many in this business, he
hasn't claimed to know all the answers but sees a solution in terms of
filling in his knowledge gaps through collaborating with others who are
specialised in the areas he has little knowledge of. This strikes me as a
much more intelligent approach than persuading a client to accept a soluton
based only on the limited knowledge of a single solution provider.
