Analyst/programmer, ALARIS Medical Systems, Basingstoke
Working on a freelance basis, I have developed for ALARIS a
=
number of programs to facilitate various aspects of testing of the =
medical equipment that this company produces. The first application
was =
written in Delphi, and all others in Borland C++ Builder (the first =
program has now been converted to Builder). Most of these programs =
involve serial communications between a PC and items of equipment =
undergoing testing or set-up.
All the programs are designed and developed by myself from a =
requirements specifications produced by the client. Most of this =
development has been on a freelance, working from home basis, but I
was =
also involved for a little over six months in working on-site as part
of =
a team conducting review and testing of the embedded code written by =
ALARIS programmers for a new range of syringe pumps.
The programs include:
A 40K line suite of programs to allow a script of tests to be =
created for post-production testing of new equipment and the running
of =
these tests, allowing various types of interaction between the
operator =
and the equipment under test. The scripting =91language=92 that these
=
programs use allows tests to be automatically selected from the script
=
based on the optional and variable items fitted to the particular =
machine under test and the results of the test sequence can be updated
=
on-line to the company=92s SQL database server.
A multithreaded program to load several blocks of embedded code
from =
disc, verify it and then upload it to one or more items of equipment =
simultaneously. The program also serves to allow configuration files
to =
be created and maintained to specify the data to be uploaded.
A program to download from an item of medical equipment its =
internally maintained log of events, decode them as necessary and
allow =
the operator to view and print the data in human readable form. This =
program supports several different models with differing
communications =
protocols and is designed on a modular basis to allow the rapid
addition =
of new models as needed.
A variety of =91one-job=92 utility programs and components to
assist =
in testing and development of embedded code.

Programmer, TAG Electronic Systems, Genesis Business Park,
Woking
As a contractor to TAG Electronics (part of the TAG-McLaren
=
group) I worked as part of a team programming alterations and extra =
features into a 300,000 line C and CScape program, which acquires and
=
displays engine and vehicle data via TAG's monitor software. The work
=
involved working on several different aspects of the program including
=
enhancements to the user interface and the graphical display of =
data.

Nov 1985 - Nov 1995
Chief Technician and Analyst/Programmer,
Language Centre, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman
At Sultan Qaboos University, the first two years of my =
contract were spent establishing the necessary technical (audio-visual
=
and computing) support for the Language centre, in which all the =
non-arts students of this new university were given an intensive
English =
course. During this set-up period I did some programming under
IBM-DOS. =
During the last eight years, however, the day-to-day running of the
=
audio-visual side of the centre was taken care of by two media =
technicians, under my supervision, leaving me free to devote the vast
=
majority of my time to programming the applications requested by
various =
members of the teaching staff.
I used C and later C++ as my main programming languages. I wrote a
=
variety of programs for text analysis, data processing/management and
=
CALL (computer assisted language learning). I also developed TSR =
programs for instant access to dictionaries and telephone directories
=
and created several of my own DOS-extension programs and utilities,
the =
writing of which has gave me a good working knowledge of the IBM PC
down =
to the BIOS and DOS interrupt level. I also wrote some 80x86 machine =
code and gained some experience of addressing component boards at the
=
port level.
I developed my own library of C++ classes for text based windows =
under DOS and for accessing dBase files (among other things). In my
last =
few months at SQU I switched to programming for the Microsoft Windows
=
platform, using Borland C++ and Borland Delphi.
I was also responsible for installing computer hardware and
software =
and troubleshooting the more than fifty desktop computers in the
centre. =
I have also written and delivered courses for professional medical
staff =
and others who were beginners to using computers.

Nov 1977 - May 85
Audio-visual Engineer, Airwork Ltd, Sultanate of Oman
I was employed by Airwork to establish a technical support
=
unit for two schools for which Airwork had teaching contracts. These
two =
military schools had, between them, five Tandberg language
laboratories, =
plus two more labs on remote sites. I was the entire technical staff,
=
with full responsibility for all aspects of the equipment. I was also
=
occasionally required to stand in for English Language and Maths =
teachers.
I became increasingly more involved with personal computers as
their =
use increased, using them for record keeping and to simplify the =
administration of the students' pay days. I used BASIC and Z-80
machine =
code on a variety of 8-bit computers.

Oct 1972 - Nov 77
Audio-visual Technician, School of Engineering Science & =
Industrial Management, University of Liverpool
I was responsible for setting up the technical support for
=
this new department, and thereafter for the operation of this support.
I =
selected, operated and maintained all audio, video, cine, photographic
=
and audio-visual equipment in the department. I also did some teaching
=
of undergraduates in the form of pre-laboratory seminars and
supervised =
laboratory sessions.
Whilst working for Liverpool University, I learned to program a =
Hewlett Packard desktop computer in its own stack-based low-level =
language and used it to develop a number of demonstration programs for
=
recruitment 'fairs'. I also attended an advanced FORTRAN course to
build =
on the knowledge of this language gained as an undergraduate.
