Re: FN-FORUM Disabled access to WAP sites

You are making a fundamental mistake confusing WAP with the browsers that
are used to surf it. WAP is not just about crappy small screen mobiles - I
regularly use my Palm to surf WAP sites - much bigger screen, better text
input, etc. It is about accessing information on the move. No one can doubt
that people have a desire to access information - isn't that the
fundamental, most basic, driving force behind the exponential rise of the
web? By making location irrelevant to getting hold of this information WAP
is satisfying that most basic driving force.
I agree that the current technology used to access WAP is not brilliant
(actually a lot of it is rubbish!) - but look to the future. With 3rd
generation data networks you will have network access at speeds comparable
to ADSL. As far more people carry a mobile phone or pda at all times than a
laptop or even desktop PC under their shoulders - you can be sure that there
is a huge untapped market bubbling just below the surface.
People who scoff at WAP and point to a connection speed of 9600 were
probably the same people who laughed at the internet back in the good old
days when the only browser you had was a text only Lynx look alike and a
connection speed of 300 baud was considered state of the art. Even Bill
Gate$ missed the boat on that one! Things are moving - and fast.
