RE: FN-FORUM metatags for framed sites

date posted 1st December 2000 12:53

Frames (if used well) can be a godsend for search engines for the very same
reason that many people despise them as regard to search engine ranking.

Many search engines will traverse a site and have no problem with a framed
page nowadays but there are still many more that dont like framed sites and
will only see the code withinthe tag.

Now think of that as giving you the opportunity to provide a "search engine
specific" page that your visitors will not see but the search engines will.
USe that to design a page that will rank higher on your chosen key words
using al lthe standard promotional aspects that you would use with a non
framed page. Also make sure you link to a page individually that contains
links to EVERY page on your site. IN time the search engine's robot will get
around to indexing them all.

Also your editor will normally put the tag at the bottom of the
page. Move it up so that it is the first part of the page to be seen by the
search engine and that way the other code on your page will not detract from
the hard work you have just put in.

This is all a cheap way and easy way of providing a "cloak" to the search
engines and providing them with optimised code for your rankings, but it
also means that you can't refine it anyt further and you will have to
provide the same code to every search engine whereas it is better to provide
a page that is optimised for every search engine individually.

The better way to do this is to use a server side based script that detects
the user agent, hostmask and or IP (For example Altavista'a robot is called
Scooter) and serve up a page depending on that. I have a script I coded and
use for clients and is available just for you lot (aint I nice :P ) at
http://www.one-eye.com/cloaker.zip

This script will ONLY work on a *nix server.

Please read the instructions in the zip and also contact me if you wish to
use it.

Thanks & Regards
