RE: FN-FORUM metatags for framed sites

date posted 1st December 2000 15:50

Yup have to agree again, but what TV radio etc do is to provide branding as
well as promotion for a specific widget service or widget product.

The branding helps no end in converting the traffic that the search engine
brings in due to increased confidence as more and more people become web
aware ( I wont use the word Internet as so many people think the Internet
starts and stops with http )and have les and less knowledge of security ,
and real risks etc. (Thinking of restaurants and waiters disappearing with
credit cards etc.)

If the client has the foresight and good commercial sense to employ someone
to look after their web promotions then these should be carried on in
conjunction with any "offline" methods so that both have the desired effect.
That effect being bringing in more of the £, shilling and pence.

The downside (as you rightly mentioned) to the TV radio etc media promotions
is the cost. The problem that to compete with a lot of the DotComs and
bricks and mortar businesses that are starting to cross over to the web is
the financial clout they have to put behind their web offerings. Just look
at Dixons for example in the run up to Christmas and their PC (pile of crap)
World Chain that sells overpriced equipment by the pallet load. Their web
site has been a success due in no small part to the TV and print exposure it
has paid for.

For Mr and Mrs SME owner the online rewards of promotion are more cost
effective if combined with decent "widgets" at a fair and competitive price.
Also the lower cost offline marketing and branding methods do no harm at
all. By this I mean making sure business cards, carrier bags, headed paper
anything that would normally carry the company name and logo also has
prominently the url of the web site. One of the best things that can be done
is plastering it in huge luminous writing over cars and vans. Not pretty to
look at for the MD and his wife's car, but it will definitely make sure that
the MD has the best chance of making the payments on that Jag.

Its all basic good common sense really and these methods along with the more
specialised web promotional aspects can only bring in more visitors to a web
site. If done correctly then visitors can be turned into purchasers which is
what we all want.

I agree most / all sites do not look to the future at all, its a case of
"lets get it up there", then they wonder why they hav'nt made
millions.....nowadays all medium to large sites need proffesional SEO to
achieve the level of traffic to make the site pay.

Obviously the best is tv radio etc I dont think so, if a site
is optimised correctly it should bring VERY targeted traffic in........ not
volume, quality. If you also compare the cost per visitor from tv and radio
it stacks up in favour of the engines. IMO anyway
