Hi John,
HTML certainly can handle inline graphics. You can set graphics to appear in
the middle of the line-height, by using tags such as and aligned with the bottom of the
line as with ,
etc.
I can't see ANY good reason to start using flash, other than to extend the
development period by a _long_ way.
In my old job I used to typeset maths using the maths markup languages TeX
and LaTeX. It's a variant on SGML and is therefore not dissimilar to HTML.
The w3.org are currently developing a math markup language called MathML.
Eventually, this should sort out your problem entirely.
Here are a few links, in case you're interested:

In the meantime, there's already quite a lot of equation markup that can
already be done in html, as this code demonstrates:
∫_a_^b^{f(x)1+x} dx, produces the output:
?_a_^b^{f(x)1+x} dx
I'm not sure how well email programs cope with it, but try it in IE5 - it
seems to work very nicely. A full explanation of currently used math html
tags are explained here:

Subject: FN-FORUM HTML problem
I am currently producing some text and accompanying maths fractions and
equations. I have been advised that even if I supply the fractions and
equations in the form of gif files, using Mathtype, there may still be
problems in incorporating them in the HTML text and aligning them correctly.
I was advised that a better approach would be for the text and maths
notation to be produced using Flash instead.
Can HTML not handle inline graphics? Can anyone offer advice as to the best
way of dealing with this?
Many thanks.
