There are many reasons why it is considered "bad" to send HTML email.
a few of them are...

1) makes the digest very hard to follow.
2) not all mail programs support it.
3) They present unneccassary security risks.
4) They use more bandwidth than their text counterparts.
5) and so on.....

I am sure there will be more reasons to follow
