Win 98 defrag

Oh yes, the hard disk has been making noises like a washing machine with
worn bearings, have rebooted, switched off everything in the background etc.
Strangely it hasn't given that error message that a 'process running under
windows' is accessing the hard drive - that used to foil the other computer
but we have ways of making it co-operate.
I'm now sitting back with a cuppa enjoying the spectacle of Ema cutting
grass with 'snail scissors' (whatever they are) which she insists is a
traditional Geordie pastime! My, how the long winter nights fly by......
Thanks for all your suggestions on this but I'm giving up for now.
