Map based websites

I have a potential web project that is basically a panel based layout showing a map and the associated attractions. When the user clicks on a part of the map a description of the attraction appears in one of the panels on the right hand side. Navigation around England and Wales through these maps would be required.

Does anyone have any experience of working on this type of project with a client who have their own GIS system who want to superimpose on to a 3rd party map.

Would it be best to use a 3rd party "web-map" company to provide the engine behind the pages? Any comments will be gratefully received.
