How to use the front page

I cant seem to make up my mind and thought that it would be an interesting
one to throw out to the forum.

On the front page i am using for a website selling components from would it
be better to have

a. lots of little pictures of categories.
of
b. a text bar on the side and use the main screen for special offers.

What do the design experts out there think is better
