Net Server Question
date posted 18th April 2001 14:18
Hopefully someone in the group will know enough about this to help.
I have an on-going project which potentially could expand into a large
number of web-sites locally and internationally. I have heard that many
ISP/Data Centres use Cobolt Blue's, but when I was looking at the server
spec's they seemed to be not too expandable.
The sites are PHP4/MySQL based and would probably need the other service
such as email etc... I was looking at some web servers built by Dell, and,
although expensive, they appear to be upgradable and fast.
I was thinking of a machine (twin 1Ghz Processors, 2Gb Ram, 3*36Gb Raid
Array). Does anyone have any idea how many sites this would host and if the
spec is overkill.
Also, the project (if the uptake is good) could spread across several
machines like this, I was considering a portal search for the sites, would
it be a benefit to have the portal/search site on the same ISP/Server array
(to save trying to get across the World Wide Walk).
Anyone got any ideas ??
