Access is very limited but it is fine to learn with.
Basic SQL statements are very similar for Access to
SQLServer. Although SQLServer obviously has more
functionality you can learn these once you're grasped
the basics. Access databases are also much easier to
set up and are loaded onto the web server as a file.
Much easier (and cheaper) than installing SQLServer.
I learned Oracle first (not for web programming).
Oracle 8i is the database I use for web now and I
woudn't recommend it for beginners. Also it's huge.
The alternative if you're going the Linux/PHP route
would be to use MySQL. Don't know much about these.
