If the clip is in Quicktime format it is fairly easy to embed and
there is a certain amount of scripting control over playback using
on-page buttons etc.
Other playback tools may allow this (Realplayer and
Windowsmediaplayer), but they may not be as reliable in all browsers
and platforms. On the other hand you need to consider media player
distribution, and offering a choice of formats seems to be most
people's solution, but then embedding different versions gets
complicated.
No easy answers on this one I am afraid
