I had a dreadful time with BT (it was surftime 24x7), it just
disconnected me at random, usually when I was in the middle of something
vital and didn't work at all for the first two weeks--the first 14 days
were "free" which is why it didn't work no doubt--it started working on
the 15th day with no intervention by BT (they said). I haven't had any
real bother with Telewest, either dial-up or cable. Their billing system
is a bit bizarre though.
