if your just planning on just design then your going to find it hard to get
SME's to let go of their cash - the economy is in a slowdown, plus business'
have actually realised the fact that just having a website isnt a
justifiable cost. although damien in wales seems to be doing well, but i
suspect he has a deal with the devil! :)
imo you need to start looking at providing solutions that will save
companies cash or raise their sales - since option 2 is dodgy ground, option
1 would be the best way forward.
plus if your mainly design you might want to talk to some of the more
technical companies out there - one company i know employs only developers
and outsources its design work to save wage bills in lean time, this works
as at a time when most new media companies are shrinking they are growing
and have a large turnover. it might be to your advantage to talk to such
companies, or even approach struggling companies about replacing their
design team by outsourcing to you.
if i was in your shoes however i'd take the jobs on the continent!

Subject: FN-FORUM Decisions, decisions
Dear All
I wonder if I could seek your advice on a pretty important
decision... My main man and I have recently come back to the UK from
working abroad at a European Union Instititution. We had admin. jobs
there, with some web design and administration thrown in.
Consequently our web skills are mainly in the areas of using
Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Tables, layers, page construction and
image manipulation are the sort of thing we're used to (nothing
particularly flashy).
We' ve moved back with the aim to setting up a small web design
agency (just the 2 of us) in our area (Hertfordshire), selling to
SMEs. We've done lots of research into the subject but just can't
seem come up with realistic sales targets as it's not really clear
how much money, if any, SMEs are willing to spend on getting their
business online. Also, freelance rates for our skill levels are not
forthcoming.
And to further complicate things, we've just had offers of jobs back
on the continent, earning £2,500 nett per month each, and are faced
with the question of whether we could realistically earn the same
(£5,000 per month) between us running the envisaged company. We'd
really like to give the web design company a go if it's a realistic
prospect!
Any tips, opinions or experiences would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks in advance.
Jo Gidney
