Modem dial up sound can be irritating but I've found it's worth tolerating
as, if you turn the volume off, you can't hear service signals (e.g.
engaged, N/U, etc) which, even if you're only using it for ISP dial-up, can
be useful feedback - especially if Freeserve dial up is as bad as it used to
be !

Hi Dave
In Windows 98 / 95:
- Start > Setting > Control Panel
- double-click 'Modems' - a window will popup
- Select your modem inside the text window
- Click 'Properties'
- You'll see a slider called 'Speaker Volume'
- Slide it to the very left ('Off') position.
