RE: FN-FORUM Firewalls

date posted 18th July 2001 19:38

I have been using the net for a vew years, and over this time I have come to
realise just how important a firewall can be. If you can't afford an
expensive one then the old addage something is better than nothing. One of
the best "cheapies" I have come accross lately is "Black Ice Defender" from
http://www.networkice.com. But if yu want a more permanant, better
firewall, why not set up a small linux firewall using something like
"zipslack", this can be set up on a old system left running in background
between your computer and your connection. Many Linux systems will install
, and run, on very small systems, 100mb hd, 4mb ram etc.

With a peramanent on connection, the Harware firewall is preferable though.

Subject: FN-FORUM Firewalls

Folks,

I think that this was mentioned awhile ago, but unable to find it in my
history.

I'm just about to get broadband-always-on at home & will be networking the
house out (the wife doesn't know that I'll be chiselling out the walls yet
(speaking of which - that means routing out the walls - is that the correct
spelling?)). ATM I have 7 PC's that will be networked in the house & I'm
thinking about dedicating one as a firewall.

What I want to know is what is the best way to do this? Do I install *nix &
some other software, do I put NT/2000 on, do I do it from DOS & what
firewall do I use - I am right in thinking that a firewall is software, or
is it hard and soft?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address

TIA
