Getting started

Hi All,
I'm really just making my first steps into the wide world of freelancing
and am looking for some help. Now I've got a few things in the pipeline
which is all well and good but what I want to try and find out what is
really the best way of advertising/networking with clients to be. Where
are good placed to advertise? Any sort of agencies I could contact?

Also I feel like im in a bit of a catch-22 that I think I'm quite good at
what I do but can't prove it until I get a few decent gigs which I won't
without some decent expierence...
