Internet and TV
date posted 9th January 2002 14:24
It seems i have found what i am looking for, and this looks like it might be
a future flyer

The most comprehensive information i have managed to get hold of is as
follows:
any comments?, will there be anything better? please let me know, i dont
want to make the wrong decision.
--------------
The current TV Internet boxes on the market had to make a choice of power or
affordability. The Bush TVs cant handle flash and cant be upgraded so never
will.
The Netgem box as used by ITVActive can handle Flash up to version 3
although
the processing power mean that it can take some time to load. It is also up
gradable via the phone line allowing service providers to offer improved
software to their existing customer base (potentially newer versions of
Flash,
etc). Netgem are improving their technology and with the drop in chip
prices
are making them more affordable it is only a matter of time before this
browser or something like it is included in more TVs.
http://www.netgem.com.
Current Sky boxes don't have a Mosaic browser built in and dont have a 56k
modem. This is why the transmit templates via satellite and fill in the
gaps
with WML. From the look of that press release only Open boxes with the
Mosaic
browser will be able to handle Flash. As Sky have only just swapped all
their
boxes out it will be a while before they do so again (if ever) and Flash is
unlikely to be widely available to all Sky customers in the near future.
Nokia are also getting into the internet on TV market with the Nokia Media
Terminal which is launched in the UK later this year. It offers multi
channel
TV, a PVR, Internet access and can easily handle flash. It is the first
step
on the road to a server sitting under the stairs delivering content (TV,
Internet, games or spread sheets) to dumb terminals around the house.
