RE: FN-FORUM BNI (ish) [OT]

As a member of BNI then I would say that I find it very hard to give
referrals to those people who I don't think provide a value for money
service.
We have one or two in our chapter and I would not give them a referral or
testimonial - unless it was someone who had annoyed me.
There are on the other hand some very, very good people in the chapter too -
our motor repairs man and the electrician come immediately to mind.
Hopefully what will happen is that those who aren't very good get starved of
referrals and then drop out.
With web design - I think the problem is that different web companies have
different specialities and very few people outside the field know the
difference between a good web site and a crap one.
Even talking to the different designers on this forum you will get
differences of opinion. I personally think that unless a client is warned
that his flash site is no more than brochureware and will not bring him new
customers and has specifically requested the site be produced in flash - the
site is crap. From my point of view a website has to perform in generating
new customers and lead to be good.
Here is one of my best sites http://www.boxermotorworks.co.uk - fairly plain
nothing really going for it in design terms. I am sure that some people
would say that the site is crap.
Once you have finished criticising the design - do a search on google.com
for 'Mercedes servicing' - then do the same on MSN.co.uk - the site
generates a couple of new customers each month for the client, who is very
happy with his website.
All the best
Ian

Hi Mart
I agree with all of your points, apart from the final one. One of the
points that we're trying to make is that the image of the BNI is being
tarnished within the web design field because it is allowing in people who
produce very shoddy work. To quote from Hutch's email:
"And if the other people in that chapter were as shit at their jobs as the
web design bloke then I honestly don't think I was
missing out on anything more than a lot of grief"
While there might be business to be made in cleaning up the mess left behind
by them, the fact that they've been recommended by a BNI member casts all
subsequent referals by that member/chapter/BNI in a bad light. Each chapter
is supposed to implement some form of quality control, but this is obviously
not working for web designers, and it's something that has to be addressed.
Hence our desire to see some contact amongst web designers who are members
of the BNI so that these sort of issues can be addressed.
Norman
