no its common practice
more benefit is gained if the interlinking sites are on topic, the link
contains keywords and the site linking to you is not penalised by any of the
SE's esp. google, aim at around a hundred or so inbound links and you will
see good improvements

You might have something there... since some engines measure inbound
links (preferably in a proper text context), is there any reason why
freelancers here can't link to each other's sites, and improve their
rankings? It should be a level playing field - ie if you've done lots of
work to optimise pages, you'll benefit, as will pages which haven't been
optimised.
