Mac weird font problem

Hello, wonder if anybody can help me with this one?
I tried to produce an invoice in QuarkXpress but for some reason the font I
usually use (Futura) wasn't displaying properly, (the letters now look like
they're made of Lego!) so I checked my other fonts and out of around 100
fonts, about 80 look rubbish now. I don't think it's quark 'cause they look
crap in Freehand and Photoshop too.

I'm using a graphite imac OS9.04.

Any ideas, or similar experiences would be most welcome.

Ps. don't wanna start a platform war (pc evangelists going Neh neh de neh
neh) I use PC and Mac and they're both bastards.
