Hi Linsday
Assuming you are using cash accounting for your VAT - which you almost
certainly are - it is the date you are paid which is important - not the
date that the invoice is dated.
Likewise on invoices out it is the date you pay them not the date on the
invoice.
Note that if you get a particularly fussy VAT inspector they treat both
dates as the date shown on your bank statement for cheques - not the date in
your paying in book / cheque book.
