I dropped out of this one to do some work (remember that stuff?) but have
caught up and read, and agreed with, nearly all you have said. The medium is
no longer the message, it has to work, it should look good - and as a
designer, selling design services, you owe it to yourself to make your own
site look great, but it should still allow prospective employers/clients to
access the portfolio and most importantly the contact details, or how are
they going to give you the work you deserve. Of course, there are degrees
here, as with most things, and a balance between wow! factor and information
access will be reached according to various factors. David Bowie doesn't
need to sell things from his web site, he doesn't even need to get any
meaningful information across - we all know who he is and what he does - but
impressive site, yes.
Another impressive site, which to my mind combines good looks, a complex but
intuitive navigation and uses some flash, yet still loads quickly is
www.gm.com - yes, the biggest capitalist corporation in the world, so Kathy
won't like it (lol) - get deep into the site
http://www.gm.com/company/gm_exp_live/events/NAIAS2002/index.html is
particularly impressive, yet it is still easy to get about.
I'm bored with typing now but a last word - hyperlinks - it's what the web
is for and about. Discuss.
