Resent as I was being real dumb and included an attachment!
The trace image I refer to is now online at:

Apologies but the smallest I could get this and still have the definition is
117K. One quick addendum is that you should be looking for the domain
extension somerouter.somenetwork.kpnqwest.com to identify if you traverse
the KPNQwest B/bone or periphery. Try tracerouting to www.kpnqwest.com to
see what I mean.
Have fun!

OK, slightly technical response here :)
Use a traceroute program to trace from your local PC through to a known US
host (I use yahoo.com or google.com as defaults). As the traceroute comes
back, it will report the hops (routers, switches, etc.) that it traverses to
reach the host. These hops are usually reported as IP addresses although
your traceroute program may resolve them to a name format. Depending on the
results returned, you can either simply read off who provides the hop to
your trace (from your PC, to your ISP, to their upstream ISP, etc.) or
subsequently use whois functions to resolve the IP addresses to names and
providers.
All this sounds complex so the best thing is to provide you with an
illustration. I use VisualRoute (www.visualware.com/visualroute/index.html -
one small tip: don't use the hosted version for the obvious reason that the
traceroute will originate from the host and NOT from your PC!) and have
attached the trace from my PC (in Devon via TheMutual.net) to Yahoo.com.
Hope this helps! Any questions, mail me directly or through the forum
digest.
Cheers,
David.
