Hi everyone, Phil, forget Photoshop 'chrome' filter but do not forget
Photoshop. See below to discover how great photoshop is.

1) Open a new doc in RGB mode. Set 25% grey as your foreground colour.
Create your shape or logo or typeface (whatever it is you're working on - if
it is type, you should choose a large point size)

2) If you use Type, then choose LAYER>RASTERIZE. Then, in the Layers
palette, make a copy of this layer by dragging it to the new layers icon at
the bottom. Set your foreground colour to 50%grey, and press
shift-option-delete (PC shift-alt-backspace) to fill this layer with 50%
grey. Press V to switch to the move tool.

3) Press the right arrow key on your keyboard five times then the down key
five times to nudge the darker grey right and down. In the layers pallette
drag this layer directly below the lighter layer. Then click on the lighter
layer in the layers palette to make it active. Press Command-E (PC
Control-E) to merge the two layers.

4) Press m to switch to the rectangular marquee tool. Drag a thin selection
( four or five pixels - it's up to you to judge how much contrast you want
in the chrome effect -then hold down the shift key and drag some more thin &
slightly thicker rectangles across your text or shape).

5) Go under Select menu and choose FEATHER. Enter 20 pixels for lo-res
(web) image or 20 pixels for hi-res (print) image, click OK.

6) Press COMMAND-L (PC CONTROL-L) to bring up LEVELS dialogue box. Grab the
bottom right OUTPUT slider and drag it left until the readout shows 64.
Click OK.

7) Press the down arrow 8 times to move the selections downwards. Press
Command-I (PC CONTOL-I) to invert the selection.

8) Press Command-L (PC CONTROL-L) to bring up LEVELS again. Grab the top
right INPUT slider and grag until the readout shows 140. Click OK. Click
Command-D (PC CONTROL-D) to deselect.

9) Under LAYER>LAYER STYLE choose BEVEL & EMBOSS. Increase depth to 500% and
size to 8 ( for hi-res -print work use 800% and size 25)

10) In the layers palette create a new layer and dragit just below your text
(or shape) layer. Press Command-E (PC CONTROL-E) to merge the layers.

11) Press Command-M (PC CONTROL-M) to bring up the CURVES dialogue
box.you'll se a straight line at a 45 degree angle. Click onthe point where
this line intersects with the top-right corner of the first box at the
bottom (it's really a grid divided into 16 boxes so the box you want you can
count as number 13 -With very top left being number 1) Okay now you've
created a point on the top right of box 13, drag it upward (not left or
right) to the middle of box 5. (You're going to add 3 more points to create
a curve like a healthy heart-monitor readout or a up-down wave with up-s and
downs of equal length). On the line, click a new point on the intersection
(top right) of box 6 and drag downward to box 14. Click on the line again
and drag upward to box 3. Click on the line again and drag down the middle
of box 12. This should give you a smooth wave shape like two (chlidlike)
mountains, or a pair of (very childlike) tits of a woman lying on her back.
('Mine don't stand up like that' - says the missus) Click OK.

12) Press Command-L (CONTROL-L) to bring up LEVELS. Grab the top right INPUT
(at he bottom of the spiky diagram) slider and drag left until the readout
shows 225 (this brightens the chrome) Click OK.

13) Go FILTER>SHARPEN>UNSHARP MASK and drag AMOUNT 500, RADIUS 10. Click OK.
(For hi-res images repeat this step once more).

14) Go LAYER>LAYER STYLE, and choose DROP SHADOW. Set SIZE to 10, DISTANCE
10. click OK (For hi-res set SIZE 45 & DISTANCE 30)

That's it, just experiment with the sliders to get different effects. The
above, by the way, was culled from 'PHOTOSHOP 6 DOWN & DIRTY TRICKS' (an
excellent little book for picking up new stuff) but it works in P/shop 5.
Good luck and all the best.
Jim.
