I think php v4.x.x has inbuilt MySQL client support so you can be almost
certain it will be able to talk to a remote MySQL server... I would be
concerned about performance of SQL queries acros...

Is there a WINS server on the network or are they using NetBEUI? I

which allows mysql and is not being used - used them for the db

There are many different views on exactly what you can get away with but
the basic rules are like this
You can point local domains at their .com equivlent without any problems
e.g. .co.uk -> .com, ....
