RE: FN-FORUM Win 2K Madness

Hi Ken,
I find either of the following ways of installing Win2K the easiest and most
reliable.
Option 1.
Format the hard drive (fat32), add the system files and drivers for the
CD-Rom (including the MSCDEX). Then reboot the computer and boot from the
hard disk. Create a folder called i386 on the hard disk and copy all of the
files from the i386 folder on the win2k CD. once this is done then run the
winnt program in the C:i386 folder. The rest should be plain sailing.
Option 2.
Boot of the win2k CD and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Shout if you need more help.

Subject: FN-FORUM Win 2K Madness
Guy's I could do with some advice here. I have spent a wasted day trying to
install W2K on a PC. Should be a breeze. It has been running NT4 and I have
upgraded the main disk from 20 to 40GB and at the same time I decided to
upgrade to W2K. But there the problems begin.....
If I start the install from the existing Windows system to create a clean
install into a new partition the install crashes in the graphical bit of the
process when it is detecting devices. The machine just stops - no messages.
If I run the install from the 4 floppies the install gives Stop Error 1E
before it even gets round to reading the CD or the detecting devices part.
1E is about lack of disk space or BIOS settings. The target partition is
6GB and spans the 1K cylinder boundary - is that an issue with 2K? The PC
has ACPI Power Management - ASUS P2B motherboard. My BIOS settings are
fairly standard.
Its a fairly recent configuration - runs NT4 fine - so before I give my copy
of 2K away I'd appreciate any ideas - especially to find out why the install
gets lost while detecting devices.
Regds
Ken
