It's also useful to know that if the shadow mask (the metal grid just behind
the phosphors that coat the inside of the screen) gets magnetised, the
degauss feature of the monitor might not be quite powerful enough to do the
job in one go. Many years ago, my parents had the brilliant idea of putting
a magnetic puzzle toy of mine on top of the TV set. Sure enough, the screen
went a very strange colour (personally I preferred it - at least it was
*something* that could distract from the interminable mindnumbing boredom
that was a continuous diet of Crossroads, but I digress).
TV sets, unlike monitors, don't normally have a degauss feature that can be
started deliberately. They do have degaussing, but it is usually wired to
happen in the first second or two after you turn on the TV set. Anyway,
going back to the family-TV-from-hell story, I do remember that getting rid
of the cast did require the TV to be turned off and on about 20 or 30 times.
My parents thought I'd gone nuts, sitting there on the carpet prodding the
dread box every thirty seconds or so, but unknown to them I was mounting a
two-pronged attack - either achievement of glory through banishing the foul
demons of green splotch, or permanently frying something and thereby
arranging at least a few days without Meg Mortimer.

PS: So what I'm saying is try doing a degauss maybe 20 or 30 times, because
it may help.
