RE: Re[2]: FN-FORUM Satellite Broadband

At some exchanges bandwidth is, pretty much, swamped (that's the
impression I get from the forums at ADSLguide and ISPreview, anyway).
Get 10 (assuming a 10-1 contention ratio, it's often a lot worse than
that) people all running Kazaa or Bearshare or Limewire or whatever
spyware-installing, warez-snagging, porn-finding p2p program they're
using and you can kiss goodbye to broadband and wave hello to sub-56k
modem speeds. Yes, that's not specifically related to latency/ping
issues, but pings in this sense are also determined by the amount of
data the remote server can shove down the pipe to your client game. That
was what I was getting at.
As to satellites, BT (or it might have been Amariska) seem to positively
encourage hosting your own server and even supply you with five static
IP addresses for this specific purpose. From what I've read it's all
perfectly good technology, that does what it says on the tin - basically
broadband anywhere. There is apparently a small lag experienced when
web-surfing but it seems that it's not very noticeable. My big problem
is with the price. It's annoying that people living in smaller towns and
villages should have to pay five times as much for broadband, but given
the choice between living in a large conurbation or out here, I know
which one I'd pick every time :-)

Hi Andy,
Not trying to 'rock the boat', but response time in this context is
nothing to do with bandwith (in a general sense) unless bandwidth is
swamped (and hence response time degredated as a knock-on effect).
With a satellite link the problem is that the packet has to go from
your dish to the orbitting satellite down to another point on the
planet and there's a latency (IE - time delay) associated with the
time that it takes to achieve this. That's not to say that bandwidth
is insufficient, but there is an initial 'delay' whilst the bits
travel the many miles to reach the other end.
I'm very interested in knowing what the ping time is between yourself
and your ISP.
The reason is that I'm thinking about (at some point in the future, if
I ever have the cash!) to live out in 'the sticks' somewhere and set
myself up with a decent link.
I was wondering whether it is feasible to host my own servers via a
Satellite link, or whether the initial 'pause' (in terms of the
end-user experience of waiting for the first bytes to be download from
their browser) would be acceptable.
Thanks in anticipation for your reply! :)
Cheers,
Richard.
