Re: FN-FORUM Rates Help

Hi Mark,
Here's some advice, since you're just starting out:
1. Figure out what your costs are: Your largest cost in this business is
going to be software. Second perhaps to training (inc. books, etc.) and
hardware.
2. Figure out how much you can charge to cover your basic costs and make
enough to live on. I'd say if your first few projects cover the cost of
software and put a little change in your pocket that you're off to a good
start.
3. As you gain more experience, raise your rates. Remember, people are
paying for your experience. As you gain more experience similar tasks will
take you less time to do. If you don't raise your rates, you may find that
the actual money you're making from projects starts to decline (since you're
working less hours.)
4. Keep good records and invoice -- if you don't ask, you won't be paid.
5. Mark-up everything: remember, you're providing a service.
I guess there's more but that should start you off!

Subject: FN-FORUM Rates Help
I hope someone on here can give me a bit of advice! I have only just started
doing freelance work and have been asked to put together a site for my
girlfriends fathers photography business. The site is going to be a basic
8-10 pages with the usual home, about, contact, enquiry form and small
gallery. As I am quite new to web design I am going to stick to simple
sites for now just to get some experience. I would like to know, for future
reference how much I should look to charge for this type of site. Also any
advice on contract and charges for updates and maintenance would be
appreciated.
Many thanks
Mark A Wedlake
