RE: FN-FORUM Site Check please.

date posted 6th September 2002 21:25

Paul,
I had thought of using png, but after reading a couple of articles on the
net, was unsure of how well supported 'png' is. I'll give it a bash, as I'd
much rather use proper alpha transparency than dithered 'gif-style'
transparency.
I must admit, I hadn't thought of needing to specify the font colour (just
blindly assumed it would be black!... how arrogant!), but shall definitely
do so.
I had also been wondering if I had made the font size too small. I always
work at 1600x1200 res screen, and often get the comment "how the hell can
you read that?". I guess I must be blessed with 20-20 vision, as I have
always worked at this res (well.... since it's been possible anayway!) and
never have eye-strain problems (touch wood). This all makes me think that
although I can read the text perfectly OK, can everyone else?
As a by product of this, even though I have that dinky little freeware
"BrowserSizer" app installed, I don't always remember to set the browser
window to smaller sizes & check how it organizes itself. Having just done
that, I've realised that the text in the strip at the top gets partially
covered by the vertical scrollbars.... guess I'll need to add to the
window-width discovery javascript routine to account for scrollbars (or be
lazy and just move it left by 25px!)
Valid point about the v4 & below browsers. I was aware of this & am
intending to build in the alternative page versions for v4 and before
version browsers once the design is reasonably stable.

thanks for your comments, Paul. Much appreciated.

Dave.

Could be a case for using a png to make use of the alpha transparency...

I don't have that in my installed fonts folder, so got verdana and it would
be easy to read if you had specified a font colour. The layout is a bit out
in Opera and Moz, with huge horiz scrolls and is an unreadable mess in
NN4... you need to use the @import for newer browsers and deliver a basic
css for NN4 and its ilk.

HTH, Paul.
