On Google it will make no difference, however if I were promoting generally
I would choose a .au domain to get into the Aussie engines. In general I
would look to my target audience to give me the indication of whic to go
with. If you promote to the Australian only udience the .au will be much
more effective, if you are looking to target a wider audience the .com is
the way to go.

So for example, if they searched for melbourne florists, would a .au get
priority over a .com, this is what I'm trying to find out although it
doesn't seem to make a difference with some but it does with others..

I'm not sure exactly what is required, I just know that you can get a .au by
getting a registrar to act as an agent for you. The cost is about £120 + £80
for the domain.
