There isn't any official English spelling. The Oxford English Dictionary,
for example, takes its spellings from the common usage. English is one of
those languages that has been left to evolve through mis-spellings, artistic
creativity and convenience. French has its Academie, but English has no
official body to guard its linguistic purity. Many of the American spellings
were introduced on purpose to make American English easier for immigrants to
learn. It certainly doesn't make American English any less rich.
