I'm assuming it crashes outlook because you have preview pane on?
I have a cunning plan....
download the eval copy of Nelson Email organiser from here:

Install that.
(it's a neat interface for Outlook, that you might even want to keep)
Basically it reads your PST and presents you with a differently
organised view of your messages.
it may (or may not) allow you to delete the offending message from
Outlook before you open outlook proper.
If you get the opportunity I'd turn off preview in NEO before you look
for the offending mail.
