Slightly different in my case, I started selling search engine optimisation
services as an add on, people take note when you have clients who say your
websites have gained them x thousand pounds of new business in the last
year.
Also its fun - if you have a particularly masochistic nature.

I've recently picked up quite a bit of work from people who've managed to
get a simple web site running and then needed some back end facilities
adding. Most folks still can't produce a database.....
It is similar to what happened to me a few years ago - when the Web first
became popular. I gave some talks to local Chambers of Commerce, etc. and
within a few weeks had lots of interest but no bites - everyone was writing
their own stuff. I packed in doing any simple web design and coding at that
point and have 'specialised' ever since in the back end side of stuff and
the more 'off the wall' sites.
I will do stuff if people ask me to, but I expect a high level of commitment
from my customers in terms of providing copy, etc. I also say to them that
if they change stuff I've done, and it stops working, they pay for me to fix
it. A lot of design work is seen by companies as being OTT for their needs.
I'm not a designer - I tend to get someone else in for design jobs - and
many clients of mine seem to be interested in getting something up that
looks alright, loads fast and works without falling over.
Perhaps we need to identify what we're selling these people. What we should
be selling them is something to give them competitive advantage. If a site
doesbn't deliver that, then it's a waste of time.

I often feel like giving up and doing something else. I made two sales
calls yesterday but was told 'it's OK someone in the company is doing our
site'. Everybody things they can do their own!! I also have half a dozen
sites with 'web site coming soon' pages - some of them for months - while I
wait and wait and wait on the 'client' coming up with the necessary material
for the site. They are obviously giving it huge priority - not! Really
gets me pixxed off sometimes!
