Re: FN-FORUM New BNI branches opening in Nottinghamshire

Sort of.....
Actually, what happened was that alrge amounts of Euro and other money
distorted local networks so that people were more bothered about getting in
on 'projects' rather than doing business.
I was a bit of a business virgin at the time. I honestly thought that
networks were designed to advance the cause of business in an area, expand
markets, let common businesses talk to each other...you know....and boldly
go where no business had gone before..:-)
I remember attending various networking events where all people used to do
was talk about the nxt networking event. It was really strange. Companies
did make a go of these things, but I always got the feeling that a lot of
stuff happened 'offline' so to say.
I've not bothered with local networks since. I do business with a few
regular customers in the UK and US, and we swap leads and put teams together
to do work from within that group. I guess it's a sort of closed network,
close to a 'virtual company' but we all are self employed. Some people I
have met through work, others are friends. If I need a designer I'll give
first refusal to my 'colleagues' if tehy feel up to it. If they don't, or
are busy, then I go to the open market and buy someone in. And if that
works we have another node in our network. I've become what I
disliked...:-)

Thanks Dave,
hehehe...I guess I feel pretty secure ignoring local networks in and around
Sheffield because in the years I tried to get involved I had a lot of pain
and little gain.
I agree - this forum and many online groups I belong to ARE networks and
I've foudn them more productive in terms of contacts and work than any
'press the flesh' networking I've ever done.
I guess it's horses for courses.

Recommend you go to your local chapter of BNI as a visitor and see for
yourself. Other peoples experiences may not necessarily be that valid as
networking is a two way process...
BNI (for example) is successful because it works... the handshakes and golf
course etc quips are nowhere to be seen.
A well run 'chapter' will eliminate cliques .. and the 'leadership' posts
change on a six montly basis to avoid this happening anyway. The sole
purpose of the meetings are to do business. That is why the high street
banks, solicitors groups and major franchise owners try to get
representatives in to many chapters at their inception.
Some people may quote negative experiences this is likely to occur in any
organisation with 9000 members UK wide..
But the only way to find out for yourself is to go and see.. it's free for
the first two visits. If it's not for you there are other networking groups
to try.
It is a very secure freelancer that can ignore the value of networking be it
BNI or any other group for that matter. (I would suggest that this forum is
no more than a network anyway.
The original post by the way was to inform people that two new chapters were
being formed. It was the 'silly handshake' bit that created the thread.
Have a nice weekend
