I=B9ve been watching the forum for a little while, and thought it was time to
post. :)
I would say that there are advantages to having a degree in a design relate=
d
subject. I=B9ve got a BA in Visual Communication, which meant I specialised i=
n
Graphic Design for 3 years and New Media Design for my final year degree
show. The skills and ideologies in design that I learnt while studying are
invaluable to me. Though I think that the commercial experience I have had
have been incredibly useful also, helping me to learn and develop beyond th=
e
basis I developed at art school. A degree isn=B9t a substitute for creativity
and talent though. And the con=B9s about studying a degree is that you spend =
4
years slogging your guts out, aren=B9t necessarily going to get a job out of
it in the end, and most likely have a lot of student debts to pay for. A
degree from the art school as well as the local interest in my degree show
helped me to find employment when I graduated, and is still useful to me no=
w
when looking for work.
There are organisations such as the chartered society of designers
http://www.csd.org.uk/ which offer support and the opportunity for a
designer to become chartered, providing they get through the assessment
criteria. It isn=B9t something I have considered joining yet though. Partly
because of the fee and also because I want to develop my portfolio further
first.=20
As for as criticism goes, if you ask for it you have to be prepared to take
what=B9s coming to you. You don=B9t have to agree or implement advice, part of
the point about being a designer is that you can make design judgements
confidently. Site checks are often great in case you have overlooked
something or you are so close to your outcome that you can=B9t really see it
anymore. Often someone looking at it for the first time with fresh eyes,
will suggest something you hadn=B9t thought of. But you can=B9t be so close to =
a
design that it is precious enough to you that criticism offends.

You dont have to have a degree or whatever to be good at what you do that i=

So in seperating the forum and providing a jun! ior or "newbie" s=

This would also stop some of the bitterness that goes on in the main forum =

Discuss anyone?
