RE: FN-FORUM OT? what TV?
date posted 29th September 2002 21:07
Hi,
I like Sony so all my kit except speakers is from them. KV32LS35S TV,
NS700 DVD, SE710 VCR, STRDE475 AMP (the weakest bit of kit). It all
works well and wasn't that expensive to put together.
The thing with home cinema is you can spend thousands and thousands
creating a system that sounds crap if it's not matched properly.
Speakers wise, front back and middle speakers should all be from the
same maker/range. I like the 600 series from B&W but Wharefdale, Mission
and Infinity are good too. Avoid those little BOSE things like the
plague - they sound terrible. Don't rule out speaker packages though,
the FS2-AV from Mission sound great and aren't massive units either.
Also don't forget a sub. If you're on a budget check out those home
cinema kits which are a dvd, amp and speaker package in one box. The
DAVS800 from Sony is a good bit of kit.
My advice is to pick up a copy of home cinema choice / what hifi and
check out the reviews sections at the back. The HCC site at
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/ is a good place to start as well.
Always, always, always, listen to the kit first, if they won't let you
then walk. Shops like Sevenoaks and Richer Sounds will set up most kit
for you to try out.
Oh, and when budgeting, don't forget to include some cash for cabling.
Good kit demands good interconnects to link it all up. You'll get some
with the gear but it's not worth the space it occupies - the same goes
for speaker cabling.
