The files it takes notice of are those I mentioned. Autoexec.nt and
config.nt. A virus also causes this (silverdollar, I think it's called). Or
the program doesn't run in NT/2k/XP. to learn more about...

Sounds like a VPN would be a better option then. Each PC dials into the
central database server which assigns the dialling PC a unique IP address
from a range specified on the central database server....

ADSL uses DUN on Windows - usually via USB rather than serial port.
If you have a LAN then you might talk to an ADSL router via the LAN
