yeah, i just found out that 2k and xp use hal - last time i ha a freeze as an nt4 box many moons ago and that was an irq issue, well one possibility struck off since my motherboard deal with acpi ----...

Sounds like a bit of spyware (winamp?????) or something similar that messes with system dlls. Run adaware or similar and check. Could also be a duff driver. Why are you using server on a workstation...
