You can sometimes make them smaller by doing a save as in Acrobat (not
Distiller) and optimising again. Generally, if the PDF was done in a high
res with loads of embedded fonts, or done as text not binary, there's not a
lot you can do.
I'd ask them to recreate the PDFs and point them at this article:

Or can you (or they) do File, Save As, postscript file, and redistill the
.ps with different job options?
