You have a choice, you can either connect directly using a crossover cable or -
and this is the smarter option - get a hub (or, more probably, a 10/100
switch). Actually there is a third option which is to go wireless but the
performance isn't quite there yet so personally I'd stick to cables for the
time being if the machines are in the same place.

Yeah, right... you'll never want to browse from it. Or download anything or...

Do you want to play/host games over the internet? Actually what kind of
connection do you have to the internet? Routers are utterly wonderful things
(but do raise some issues that you need to be aware of).
