RE: FN-FORUM Re: [ OT ] physics question...

date posted 11th January 2003 08:14

Veering slightly further OT here ... When my mother had a serious stroke
a few months back, the Doctor in the A&E department was Indian and when
he was trying to explain to us what had happened, what her chances were,
etc I was having to ask him to repeat virtually everything he said -
this was nothing to do with his command of the English language, it was
just that his voice was so heavily accented I simply couldn't understand
him. Whilst I'm not necessarily questioning the ability of anyone in
these situations (although someone at the hospital, not necessarily this
doctor, did finally manage to mis-diagnose my mother!), the language
barrier can often present unnecessary problems.

I had a similar experience. I've always dealt with Ireland and still do
for business calls. But I had to call about a home machine for a client.
I got India and even though the girl was really helpful, we talked at
cross-purposes for ages (I just wanted the latest drivers for the NIC
and sound card and couldn't find them on the Web site). In the end we
resorted to email - I just used very formal and correct English and we
did OK. It took three days, though!

The moral is - buy Optiplex or Precision, not Dimension, if you want to
use Dell support.
