Might be speaking out of turn, but wouldn't it be easier to create a
small JPEG/GIF with red at the top and blue at the bottom that you set
to bg for the table - or stretch to fit the table?

Might be a reason why you can't do this but it's the first thing that
comes to mind.

if you go to www.dimack.co.uk/red you will see something I am working
on, look at the area where the red an blue are (don't worry they are not
going to be there permanently it is just to show my problem). I have
used the valign tag to align the red table within the blue table cell to
the top yet it sits at the bottom, can't seem to figure it out, any
ideas?
