I don't have time to look right now, so can someone kindly summarise how
that compares to using the IR's own system?

I must be lucky with my tax office. My accounts were inspected a few
years ago, and they did find a couple of adjustments to make me pay a
little more, but they were very good about it, gave me every opportunity
to argue my case, explained the issues in detail, etc. They did not
back-date the adjustments for 5 years, as they are allowed to, and did
not fine me (but then I think it was pretty obvious that I had tried to
get it right, and one of the problems was my ex-accountant's fault
anyway). Similarly phone calls to the local office are always fine, it
is just getting their records corrected which is a complete nightmare.
But then the VAT is just as bad. Last year they input my VAT number when
deregistering another company due to insolvency. You can probably
imagine the chaos that caused. And don't even start me on our house
moves last year...
